After a series of newspaper articles uncovered serious chronic violence against nursing home residents, the Illinois legislature passed a laudable bill to crack down on nursing homes. Michael Gelder, the governor’s top health care advisor noted that the bill, which passed 118 – 0, "reflects a change of direction for the state," and stated, "It sends a very clear message that nursing homes are going to provide high-quality care, and they’re not going to be dominated by individuals who have put profit ahead of the care and needs of their residents."
